Food Bank of Delaware and Catholic Charities

Diocese of Wilmington Mark Grand Opening of New

Food Store

The Food Bank of Delaware and Catholic Charities celebrated their new partnership
with the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony of The Market, the Food Bank’s
new low-cost food store, located in the Catholic Charities Thrift Center at 1320
E. 23rd Street in Wilmington.

After a successful pilot at the Food Bank’s Newark warehouse, Catholic Charities
is pleased to welcome The Market to its new location at the Thrift Center. The new
location will allow both human service agencies to reach an underserved area
where, traditionally, access to nutritious foods has been limited.

“Catholic Charities is delighted to join forces with the Food Bank of Delaware to
meet the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Richelle A. Vible, Executive
Director of Catholic Charities.  “In today’s economy, it makes sense for the Food Bank of Delaware and Catholic Charities to work together and provide more assistance to the local community than we could have done individually.”

To help Delawareans save money on their monthly grocery bill and alleviate the burdens of the deepening recession, the store is open to the public to purchase low-price household staples. From cereal and juices to cosmetics and cleaning supplies, the store is stocked to meet a household’s basic needs.

“More and more Delawareans are struggling to make ends meet,” said Patricia Beebe, Food Bank of Delaware President & CEO. “Families that once donated their time and money to human service agencies now need help themselves. The Market is a resource for families regardless of income - everyone can use a little extra help during these tough times.”

The new location in the Thrift Center will allow shoppers to not only purchase food items, but other household necessities. Catholic Charities Thrift Center in Northeast Wilmington provides provides gently used clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods, mattresses and more at deeply discounted prices.  The center also serves as a community resource, linking residents in need to information about and referrals to other community programs.  Proceeds from Thrift Center sales benefit Catholic Charities programming.

All food sold in The Market is purchased by the Food Bank of Delaware from national retailers and food wholesalers. No donated food is sold, and all proceeds benefit the Food Bank’s other hunger-relief programs. Products are stocked daily and inventory will vary based on availability.
